Better Together: Reflections on the Vision Therapy Community in Canada

Emergent VT Blog: Vision therapy training and clinical insights

Recently, I had the privilege of traveling to Canada to lecture at the Vision Therapy Canada annual conference. The theme of this year's meeting was "Better Together." By the end of the weekend, it was clear that those two words perfectly captured the spirit of the event. From the attendees to the presenters to the organizers, there was a genuine sense of vision therapy community throughout the conference.

Warmth and Openness Everywhere

One of the first things I noticed was the warmth of the people. Everyone was welcoming, engaged, and eager to connect. Whether during lectures, meals, or hallway conversations, there was a feeling that we were all working toward the same goal. While conferences are often remembered for the information shared, I find they are equally defined by the relationships that are strengthened and the new connections that are formed.

I had the opportunity to present material that I am passionate about. Sharing ideas with a new audience is always rewarding. I enjoy hearing how other practitioners approach similar challenges in their own clinics. The thoughtful questions and discussions throughout the weekend reflected a strong commitment to patient care and professional growth.

The conference also featured presentations from Dr. Patrick Quaid. Patrick's passion for helping patients and advancing vision therapy was evident throughout his lectures. His enthusiasm for the profession is contagious. He challenged attendees to think deeply about the work we do and the impact we have on the lives of our patients.

Growing Alongside Others, that's Vision Therapy Community

Another highlight of the weekend was the presentation by Dr. Paul Rollett and Natasha Wilch. Their collaboration brought together perspectives from optometry and physical therapy. The result was both informative and practical. Their presentation served as an excellent example of how different professions can work together to achieve better outcomes for patients.

Throughout the weekend, I found myself reflecting on how much of my own professional growth has come from learning alongside others. Every practitioner brings a unique perspective and set of experiences. When those perspectives are shared openly, everyone benefits. That spirit of collaboration was present in every session I attended.

The Best Moments Happen Between Sessions

Some of my favorite moments occurred outside the lecture hall. Conversations over coffee often led to new ideas. Discussions between sessions created opportunities to learn from colleagues in different practice settings. Those informal interactions reminded me that education continues long after a presentation has ended.

As I traveled home, I reflected on how appropriate the theme "Better Together" truly was. Vision Therapy Canada brought together dedicated professionals who are committed to learning, sharing, and supporting one another. I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated in the event. I left inspired, energized, and grateful to be part of a profession that continues to prove we truly are better together.
