Check out our new and Improved Cheiroscope!

Updated: 2 days ago

Hey, guys! Andy here! :)

Today we will be presenting our new and improved Cheiroscope. Our team has been working real hard on making these the best quality ever. Hope you enjoy the post!

The new enhanced Cheiroscope is now easier to use and more durable and believe it or not less expensive. This all-in-one device is compatible with any non-porous surface and our Tiltboard. It conveniently folds up for easy placement on your desk.

If you are a little rusty on what a cheiroscope is and what it can be used for, you can learn that here:

What is a Cheiroscope?

A cheiroscope is a great tool to use to work on anti-suppression particularly with patients with amblyopia. When a patient looks into the cheiroscope, one eye sees the reflection of an image while the other eye sees the white board (if you are not using Emergent's tiltboard dry erase surface, this can just be a piece of paper and pen or marker - brighter colors are better). A patient should be able to see the reflected image projected on the blank paper or surface. The goal is to then trace the image they are seeing onto the piece of paper or dry erase surface.

Note from Dr. Winters: "This is a great activity because it produces a novel space where the better seeing eye sees a "virtual image" being projected on a piece of paper. The poorer seeing eye then uses motor reinforcement to view the marker that is tracing the image. This can really break down suppression and can help improve acuity due to the sensory input that is achieved through this activity."

Note of caution from Dr. Winters: "As with all of our products, the cheiroscope should only be used under the supervision of an optometrist. With my patients, I did not use this instrument with patients who have not already developed binocular fusion. If they are unable to fuse, this can break down suppression and cause diplopia if they do not already know how to fuse the two eyes. Once patients have developed fusion or for non-strabismic amblyopia patients, the cheiroscope can serve as a very powerful tool to break down suppression."

Normally, you can't send a product like this home. But, as you can see from our website, (Password protected - to register for the website, please go here) the product is very affordable and can be used easily sent home with patients to do as a home therapy activity.
